Good Teaching & Wise Counsel from Sara L.Mastros
This program is for adults ages 18+ who are fluent in English and want to learn magic. There are no pre-requisites, although if you have no experience at all with magic, you have chosen a very brave and exciting way to start! Fortune favors the bold! For beginners who would like a bit more hand-holding, you might consider my course, Introduction to Witchcraft and/or its companion textbook.
Inquiry based learning (IBL) is a broad category of pedagogical (teaching) methods that focus on student-centered real-time curriculum design intended to develop in students the confidence, deductive reasoning, and habits of mind required to guide their own learning. It is sometimes called “guide on the side” teaching, as opposed to “sage on a stage” teaching. In the Western academic tradition, it was pioneered by Pythagoras. He called those who attended such teaching ακουσματικοι (akousmatikoi), or “those who listen” and those brave enough to question him μαθηματικοι (mathematikoi), which literally means “those who who learn”. That word is the root of our modern word “mathematician.” After a long, complex history, the development of modern Inquiry Based Learning methods in American education began in the early 20th century with Dr. Robert Lee Moore, a professor of topology (whacky geometry) at the University of Texas.
I was initiated into “Moore Method Mathematics” in 1999 while studying under the famed topologist Dr. Bob Heath, of blessed memory, himself an initiate of Dr. F. Burton Jones, an initiate of Dr. Moore. I began my formal career as a Moore Method educator in 2006, while pursuing a pHd in analytic topology under Dr. Heath’s direction. In the twenty years since, I have taught formal inquiry based courses in both mathematics and philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, redeveloped the “College in High School” mathematics curriculum for Allegheny County, taught inquiry-based mathematics at a variety of independent high schools, and finished my mathematics career by designing, implementing, and teaching an entirely inquiry-led mathematics curriculum at the Jewish High School of Connecticut (grades 9-12) and the JHSC Albert Einstein School for the Gifted (grades 6-12). During that time, I also wrote and peer-reviewed curricula for the Journal of Inquiry Based Learning in Mathematics. In 2016, I left mathematics to pursue a full time career as a degenerate sorceress with no real job, a decision I have never regretted. I am religiously devoted to the great Teacher of Teachers, and understand my Great Work (at least for now) to be raising up an army of witches prepared to weave weird new ways of being in a world that desperately needs us.
I have been practicing magic as long as I can recall, and eagerly seeking out teaching on it. Beginning in the late 1980s, I began studying modern American Witchcraft, followed by my initiation into Solomonic Sorcery in the mid 1990s. In the intervening decades, I have had too many wonderful teachers to count, but especially formative ones were my colleagues and teachers Jason Miller (whom I first studied with in 2011) and Caroline Kenner (since 2013). Since quitting the real world in 2016, I have written four well-received books on magic, The Big Book of Magical Incense, Orphic Hymns, Grimoire, The Sorcery of Solomon: A Guide to the 44 Planetary Pentacles of the Magician King, and Introduction to Witchcraft: Thirteen Lessons in the Practice of Magic. Additionally, I have taught thousands of students online, locally, and at conventions, festivals, and gatherings across the United States, England, Wales, and Italy. Although I implement some inquiry into that teaching, I have not yet tried my hand at entirely inquiry-led magical teaching, until now! Will you join me?
